My Boat Won't Start
It's spring and your first day of boating. You turn the key and what is that sound you hear? Why it's nothing. Hopefully you are still at home or at least have not put the boat in the water yet.
The good news is that the most often reason is a dead battery. If you didn't fully charge the battery before storage, if your charging system isn't meeting specifications, or the battery is old then most likely all you need is to charge the battery or replace it.
Be aware that replacing a battery might get you a fun day of boating unless you find out why your old battery failed you are asking to be left floating and waiting for a tow. There are many reasons that a boat battery might not have a full charge when you need it. Remember that while you are out there drifting along most of the time the radio and other electrical devices are still pulling from the battery. Several hours of relaxation and a short run into the dock can equal a less than full charge on the battery. Then a few weeks sitting and all of a sudden your boat won't start.
Whatever the reason for a low battery you need to make sure the problem gets diagnosed and solved before you find yourself bobbing in the middle of nowhere and with possibly not enough electrical power for the radio to call for help.
On the other hand if the engine just spins over and over about all the average boat owner can do is make sure it is getting fuel and possibly change the spark plugs. Other than that it is time to call in an expert.
